August 31 2012 Finally got this picture

I have been trying to get this picture each time we come into town but either a tree is in the way or we are driving by too fast.  I took it initially for my son Joe because he likes the symbol, but after asking what it says, I decided it was a good picture for the blog also. I was told it says something to do with WW2 and it is a replica of a medal during that time.

August 30 2012 Fascinating........

I am sorry that I am posting this picture if it offends anyone, but right now cows giving birth is kind of fascinating to me.  I just felt bad for this one, can’t imagine walking around with “feet” hanging out of me!!!  I know, it is an animal………….

August 29 2012 Another salad with an unusual name........

I have never had this salad before and Yulia informed us that it is called “Broken Heart Salad”.  She also reminded us to mix it all up together before eating it…….reason for the name………the meat is heart!!! 

August 28 2012 Cute......

I had to share this picture of the salad we had at a restaurant the other day.  A flower made from cooked egg white and a slice of carrot.  Tasted good too!!!

August 26 2012 Another new melon

We saw some different melons in the store today and some looked like what we thought were cantaloupes…….until we cut it open!!!  It did not smell like cantaloupe…..not sure how to describe how it smelled, not really bad but not like cantaloupe. 

After cutting it up we tasted it and I would describe it as kind of like musk melon and the consistency of an apple.  It was good tasting, just nothing we have had before.

August 25 2012 Such a cute video......

I think this is so cute when calves do this to each other and I finally got a decent video………I know they are trying to suck milk off each other’s mouths, but it looks like they are kissing and playing.

August 24 2012 Animal watching

I was watching this heifer drinking from this hose that hangs from the water line. 

She was not at all interested in drinking from the barrel. 

It was funny to watch her let it drip on her tongue and then get it in her mouth and suck on it.  I don’t think the water was coming out fast enough for her.

Since we have to use filtered water I fill these pouches up with a funnel……..

August 22 2012 A Calf is Born

This is the very first calf I have seen born. Lewis had to help her deliver and it was pretty amazing to see him doing that…….I video recorded the whole thing but it is too long for the blog so I will show you the baby calf after it was born. Lewis did a great job!!! 

August 21 2012 Rug Beating

The familiar sound of someone outside beating their carpet, another thing that was different to us when we first got to Russia.  One of these days that will be Lewis down there beating the dirt off of our carpets.

 

 

August 20 2012 A New Melon to Try

We found a new kind of melon at the store this week and thought we would give it a try.  We don’t know the name of it, but this is what the store label said it was called…………..

 

 

It tasted GREAT!!!

August 19 2012 Sad news today..........

Today I received sad news.  One of the frogs died.  For those who don’t know the story, here it is……..In Jun 2009 Aimee gave me two little frogs for my birthday present.  They lived in this little plastic cube and their own “ecosystem”.  All that needs to be done for their care was to make sure the water level stayed at a certain place and feed them each two little food pellets twice a week.  Well these frogs miraculously lived for a very long time after I got them (don’t know how long they were alive before I got them).  They were moved to Ohio and also back to Wyoming in December 2011 for their new home.  At that time I decided to give them to my friend Suzanne’s sons to take care of and keep.  Today, just one day short of 8 months after I gave them to their new family the smallest frog of the two has gone to frog heaven. 

His new family was even nice enough to give him a little funeral.  I still can’t believe they have lived this long, let’s see how long this next one stays alive without his little friend.

August 18 2012 My 1st ever bee sting!!

 

I am not a happy person today…….when I went outside to hang up clothes, little did I know a bee came back with me.  It had flown up my pant leg and stung me when I was walking back into the apartment. That hurt!!!  I have never been stung before and am very thankful to now know that I am not allergic to bee stings.

August 16 2012 A Rare Thing With Me.........

This is how I look quite often when we are at the dairies, especially if Lewis is busy with things and doesn’t need my help right then. 

 

 

I started the book “The Hunger Games” before we came to Russia and we also went to see the movie.  Well, it took me awhile to get the first book in the series finished for some reason, but once I started the second book I had a hard time putting it down so I was very happy to be able to read it at any time using my phone.   I finished the second book in about 8 days and started on the third and final book.  That was 3 days ago and I am halfway through it at this point. For those of you who read a lot this may not seem so great, but for me it is pretty fast reading.  I finished the second and third book in 2.5 weeks, now awaiting the second and third movie.
