September 25 - 30 2012 Trip to USA

The end of September we left for a trip to the USA.  This trip would involve business matters and visiting friends and families.
At the airport in Moscow there was a Baskin Robbins kiosk.  Lewis saw the person inside "working" and showed me and of course I had to take a picture.  She obviously wasn't very busy with customers and obviously wasn't too worried about being caught "sleeping on the job"

Lewis and I have seen many suitcases in the European airports with this plastic wrap on them.  We often wondered what happens when the luggage goes through security if they have to cut it all off, but also agree it is a great idea for keeping everything intact and dry.  On this trip we brought two of our suitcases that were pretty poor quality and not lasting well, so in order to protect them and ensuring they made the trip we decided to have our luggage "wrapped".  So here is a video showing the process and a picture of the after product.

One of my strange "phobias" with flying is that I do not like to fly over water, especially the ocean.  Well on this trip I sat next to the window and actually looked out at one point, here is proof.......a picture of Quebec Canada from the air.

When we first arrived Lewis spent the first week (last week of September) with the group from Russia that he works with and I went to Texas to visit my sons and several friends.

(Well at least for ME!!  ha ha)
As I was putting pictures together from this week I realized that I took more pictures of the food that I ate with my friends than I did of them. So here goes my Texas trip.......
First stop was to visit my very good friend Christine Settles in Diana Texas.......
Now this is what you call TEXAS.......

Then we went to Christine's parents house for a visit, wonderful wonderful people.  Cool Halloween decorations on the lawn........or are they real????

Christine let me leave our wrapped and packages Christmast gifts for our family at her house until Christmas when she was so kind as to mail them for us.  Their dog Peanut was very interested in what I was doing and kept an eye on me.

Next day I went to Commerce, TX to have lunch with my good friend Tiffany Harrison.......what a fun little sandwich place for lunch.  That evening I spent the night at her house and the next day,  I was informed that there was a waterfall outside...........remember that story Tiffany?

I had dinner with my son Joe in Rockwall Texas and can't believe that I didn't get a picture of him while we were hanging out, but here is our appetizer, does that count for something?  Oh and Joe's arm.......ha ha!!!

The remaining 2 days were spent with my very good friends Kent and Colleen Vroman who live in Greenville, Texas. The first night we went to a buffet type restaurant with some of their grandkids and kids and Kent's father.  I was teasing one of the grandkids when he brought this to the table to eat......it looked like an alien.....

The next day my oldest son Steve came to visit while he was passing through to go to another place in Texas.  It was really good to see him, but he needs new shoes.......

The next morning before leaving Greenville for the airport in Dallas, I made one last visit to my other son Chris, we miss you Chris and look forward to seeing you again someday!!

September 24, 2012 A bunch of "mother hens"

The other day the heifer that is laying down had a little medical procedure done.  Afterward I noticed several of the heifers in the pen next to her were making sure she was OK.....ohhhhh, how sweet!!!

September 23, 2012 I knew I was right!!

Back in June when we went to St Petersburg for church and I ended up in the men’s bathroom to change clothes I have been wondering if it was just my imagination that most of the public bathrooms we go to were unisex.
So I have been much more observant and noticed many signs like the following one letting me know that it IS NOT my imagination.  I guess I needed to make myself feel assured since it was such an embarrassing and awkward moment.

September 22, 2012 A Chair only for meetings!!

DO NOT sit in this chair unless it is a “Meeting”……………..you never know what might happen!!!

September 21, 2012 Beware!!!

WATCH OUT FOR STUDENT DRIVERS

September 20, 2012 Update on the garden.......

Gardens are being harvested and here is the update (and a reminder of how it has looked) of the garden we see from our apartment bedroom window.......

September 19, 2012 Office desk.......

We have been in several offices here in Russia and have noticed a similarity in all of them.  They have an “extension” going out from the front of the desk.  Actually we thought this was a very good idea for small meetings etc.

September 18, 2012 Fruits and Vegetables

Someday we will stop and get some of these fruits and vegetables and I bet they will be YUMMY!!

September 17, 2012 Bundled up in the middle of September

This little boy is sooooo cute!!  But we have noticed that adults and children dress very warmly already.  We are wondering what is it going to be like in the middle of the winter when it is really cold?

September 16, 2012 Efficient shopping cart

This is one of Lewis’ favorite parts of our grocery shopping experience……
YES, the shopping cart!!
In the states when we have gone shopping, getting a cart that works is hit and miss……..it is either good (rarely) or it squeaks, or makes loud noises or is very difficult to push.
Well the following is a demonstration from Lewis on how wonderful these shopping carts are.  You can push them in any direction, even to the side with ease.
Kind of like the wheels on luggage that go in all directions without any problem.
 A dream comes true!!!

FYI -
Our Modem was down for several days so the blog was just updated on September 15th covering the down days of  Sept 7 - Sept 15 ...........check out what we've been up to during that time........hopefully no more interruptions!!

September 15, 2012 Is it Love????

Do you see the heart?

September 14 2012 Is it a fish????

Sometimes these animals “play” with their tongues, but this particular one did it for hours and it made us laugh a lot!!  Lewis said it looks like there is a fish flopping around in her mouth by the way her tongue moves.  Hilarious!!!

September 13, 2012 We find humor in the strangest places.

As we were riding the escalators to get to the different areas of the metro, Lewis showed me something that ended up being something really funny to watch.  Because of the steep incline it appears that people are either leaning forward or leaning back when they are really standing straight.  So I took several pictures that had us laughing……..they are a little blurry but you can see what we are talking about…………we are easily entertained apparently!!!
