May 12, 2012 1st shopping trip and 1st apartment meal

May 12, 2012
Our translator allowed us to sleep in some in order to "catch up" and in the afternoon took us to a grocery store for just a few things, more another day of course.  We sure needed him since nothing is in English, some things the brand is in English and recognizable, but for the most part all in Russian.  Thank goodness for pictures to recognize content.  We also found out that after you pay you use your own bags or pay 10 cents (well 10 coins not rubles) for each bag.  So we will need to remember to bring and reuse our bags.

Our body clocks are so off right now, and it doesn't help that the sun does not go down until 11pm, so about midnight on Saturday night we realized we hadn't eaten all day, but at that time of night we didn't want too much to eat.  So here is our first meal in our apartment or flat as they call it, Saturday night at midnight eating cereal.
On a little side note, see that carton of milk.....well it smelled a little strange.  We weren't sure if it was the way milk is or something was wrong.  We checked the expiration date and it was about 2 weeks ago.  We have now noticed that we need to check it on everything edible because they don't pull expired food off the shelf anytime soon so far as we can tell.  We did have more milk in the refrigerator thank goodness, it came in a bag.  We realized we also had no way of storing this in the refrigerator without it spilling so we tucked it into the tea kettle they had left for us.  Improvising, that is the name of the game.
