June 9 2012 Lewis' haircut and a train ride to St Petersburg

Today is a work day in Russia even though it is a Saturday.  For many holidays, instead of just giving you that day off as in a 4 day work week with a holiday, you have to make up the holiday or non work day on Saturday.  Monday and Tuesday (June 11 and 12) are holidays and one of them is a holiday that has to be made up.......so Lewis spent the day at the apartment working.  Lewis had a lot of paperwork to do to be prepared for a meeting on Wednesday when we return from our "trip" so he spent the day working on all of that and when he was done we packed........very light I must say, for the next 3 days and went to get Lewis a haircut.  It is always difficult when you are in a new place to trust someone to cut your hair and being in a foreign country where you have to rely on someone else to translate what needs to be done is even more crazy.  But as you can see through the process, he turned out even more handsome than when he started.

Here is a picture of our "light" packing.  We impressed ourselves actually!!  Since we would be on a train all night and then walking around St Petersburg all of Sunday morning before going to church we decided to keep our clothes for church on hangers and cover them with a garbage bag for protection and minimal wrinkling.

My first Russia train ride and Lewis' second...........Here we are following Konstantin, who drove us to the train station and Yulia, who is going with us as our translator/tour guide.

Our ticket, which we had no idea what it said.......we did finally find our "bed" number on it even though Yulia told us which numbers were ours.

When we first started the ride I took a short video showing outside of the train.

Yulia asked them to bring us some "chocolate", not sure why, but it was good!!  They brought it along with the "bed clothes"

In our compartment there are 4 "beds"  2 on each side.  Yulia referred to them as the "upper shelves" and the "lower shelves"  We were on the 2 lower shelves and thankfully no one ever got on the train to be our roomies.  On each of the upper shelves there are 2 mattresses rolled up.  Lewis is the best he made both of our beds........he did an awesome job!!!

This is a picture of the hallway with windows on the left and compartments to sleep in on the right.  Also a picture of a phone booth out in the middle of nowhere it seems.  They do actually use these phone booths we are told!!!

Now, last, but not least, is a strange picture I am sure but I took it nonetheless.  The bathroom on the train was actually decent compared to most bathrooms I have been in while in Russia.  When I flushed the toilet, it surprised me to see the ground and train tracks passing right below.  I'm glad that doesn't happen in airplane bathrooms......or does it?
